Semester 1

VIC301B1, Imaging 2, 20 Units, Jonathan Cummins
In this studio-based module, you will explore the narrative potential of lens-based images and their application and interpretation in visual communication design. Weekly presentations develop an awareness of visual narrative through a consideration of contemporary photography, visual design and moving image. Weekly studio assignments in areas such as lighting, camera, composition and juxtaposition will help you develop the skills needed to better plan, produce and interpret images.

VIC306B1, Entrepreneurship, 10 Credit Points, Liam McComish
Entrepreneurship, seeks to build students awareness of entrepreneurship and provide them with a framework for assessing the viability of any innovative project or new venture or the development of an existing one. It aims to give the student insights to the problems and issues associated with establishing and managing the development of a new or existing venture. Finally it seeks to give students an opportunity to audit their personal entrepreneurial potential.

In this research-focused module, you will explore the changing nature of contemporary visual communications practice in areas such as copyright, ethics, sustainability, branding and cultural entrepreneurship. Module content is primarily student led. Typically, you will prepare presentations and write reports on your chosen area of research. You will develop your ability to research, write and present findings in a coherent and professional manner.

The module extends understanding of graphic and typographic design, in particular students will examine the role materials and media play in how design is conceived, produced and experienced. It introduces working processes methods and terminology required for visual communication in print, web and environmental context. Fundamental design principles are re-enforced but there is a requirement to experiment with new and traditional media, materials and methods and to develop a rigorous approach to the acquisition of knowledge and skills related to communication design. Topics include contexts for practice, an introduction to web design, layout and interface, typography and imaging for print and screen, and environmental graphics

Semester 2

VIC303B2, Research and Writing 2, 20 Credit Points, Pat Griffin
The module considers seminal and recent academic approaches and debates in design for visual communication. Using exemplar historical and theoretical texts students develop an understanding in the ways in which issues and discourses are constructed in relation to their practice and the wider context of art and design.

VIC304B2 Corporate Design and Advertising, 20 Credit Points, Richard McElveen
The module develops student awareness of a range of Visual Communication Design as applied in corporate and advertising contexts. It introduces working processes, methods required for developing design solutions with regard to contemporary industry norms. You are required to experiment with new and traditional media, materials and methods and to develop a rigorous approach to the acquisition of knowledge and skills related to corporate and advertising processes, branding, corporate identity, design strategy, studio practice, creative pitch, art direction, copy writing, visualisation, media awareness and media buying.

VIC305, Design Narrative and Motion, 20 Credit Points, Christine Blaney
The module introduces a range of motion graphics techniques, methods and formats. It focuses primarily on experimentation with narrative and motion to communicate design and communication ideas. It encourages experimentation with traditional approaches, methods and skills in a digital animation environment.
