Skyscraping Bookmarks

These bookmarks are created from the 3 tallest building in Sweden to a scale of 1:1000.  They also have produced a bookmark for the world’s tallest building The Burj Dubai.

These holders have been illustrated in different styles and periods. Together they create an entire city on a book shelf.

Drawing Unlimited promotes and celebrates the experimental drawing work of UU students across courses and across year groups.

The Drawing Unlimited Project (School of Art and Design) took place in November 2009 and March 2010. Students used drawing to motivate, challenge, inspire and make links.

The workshops were designed to explore traditional drawing methods alongside digital methods e.g. drawing over still and moving imagery projected onto large rolls of paper, using paint, ink, crayons, pencils, drawing directly onto video footage via a drawing tablet and collaborating with others to devise drawing methods, improvise tools and solve problems.

An unlikely pairing has been made when Tom Gauld, a comic artist, was requested to produce a series of art work which would appear on Diet Coke cans.  The unfortunate part of this is that they only were released in America.  The idea behind these designs was to elevate the awareness of a woman’s heart health programme called The Heart Truth. As well as producing this art work he went unto create some animations that were also used within this campaign.  You can view two of them here.

I really like his work and they appear so simple but they create a completely different look to that of a normal drinks can.

Hand Job: A Catalogue of Type by Mike Perry is one of those books that I can open to any page and instantly think, “I wish I was this awesome.” I love hand drawn type and this book, it has become my favorite source of inspiration and can’t wait for the opportunity to draw some type to arise. Mike has included a great collection of artists and designers with a variety of styles. It is available to loan from the library at uni too

I was really intrigued by this poster design advertising Coca-Cola by eBoy. I originally noticed it on the side of a bus stop and later our tutor showed us a copy in class. I really like the lego-esk, modular design. It makes me think of gaming or augmented technology because Belfast is the city I live in. It’s just really experimental, fun and it is probably one of the more innovative advertisement designs Coca-Cola have used. It also made me think of the Jones Soda Co. bottle designs.

This illustrator was brought to my attention on the Creative Review blog were she designed her own cover for Creative Review.  When I saw this I was drawn to see more of her work and decided to explore her website and really liked her style and the way the she only uses pen and paper, all of her pieces have been hand produced.   I believe that there isn’t much of this style around and the moment given that more and more illustrators are moving towards computer generated images and it’s nice to get to observe some hand drawing illustrations. 

I believe that her work has to be admired and when you study it you experience a feel good feeling.  Below I have displayed a few pieces that really caught my eye.  Click here to view more of her work

I was walking to the train from work the other day and I noticed this graffiti on the wall under the bridge outside Cenrtal Station. I just thought I would share it because I think it’s cool. It reminds me of work done by a guy who was in my foundation year, his name was Lucas, I think. He had his own exhibitions and he was only 16! I really like the style of some of the work and I think it’s really interesting that whoever did it was inspired to do it. Grafitti is so rebellious and reflects a real urge in people to express themselves.
