Ad agency Wieden & kennedy Amsterdam has launched The Kennedys, an apprentice programme for all young creative’s from within all disciplines. It offers the opportunity for participants to move to the city and work at the agency for six months, with pay.

It is open to any young talent with a European passport. Six people will be selected and be asked to move to Amsterdam for six months. W&K will cover travel expenses; they will also provide accommodation and pay you the minimum wage.

This will give you the opportunity to see what it’s like to work in advertising. The 6 students will work as a separate group within the agency but will be sent actual assignments and genuine deadlines.

The project will start on 1st June. To apply, submit and answer this question ‘What does the future look like?’ along with your details online at http://www.thekennedys.nl/ the deadline for entries is 30th March.

The Independent has just launched ‘i’, its new daily newspaper “designed for people with busy, modern lives”. But what exactly is it for?

Editor-in-chief Simon Kelner claims that the 20p title is “the first quality daily paper to be launched in Britain for 25 years”

I have to say that the results are however a little confusing, from these photographs the layout has a lot happening and there doesn’t seem to be too much white space. There are splashes of colour sections, making the days of black and white long gone. There are many boxes of text and tabs everywhere and looks more suited to the web. Every though the internet is at its peak do we want that in our newspapers?

The point of the newspaper is that it can be consumed in a small amount of time. The News Matrix (above) provides 15 stories over a spread, each with only a mere 40-wordparagaph.

This new design isn’t surprising given that the owner of The Independent Alexander Lebedev, famously turned The Evening Standard into a giveaway.

The most successful sections are the ones devoid of advertising. A Health spread gives the impression that there’s a more in-depth feature to be read.

Creative Review believes that this new reading experience is to fit in with the pace of contemporary life and the moment just adds confusion. I have to disagree with this; to me it doesn’t seem easy to follow. I want to look at a spread and know what the main headlines are immediately and not have to take time to read each section to find what I’m looking for.

I know that it is difficult to get everything perfect straight away but I feel to create a user friendly newspaper it still needs a lot of work. This is just my opinion and I’d be interested to know what you think?

Happy was established in Gothenburg in 1997. They are a graphic design company that want to help and maintain client’s brand. They produce a range of design medium, ranging from branding, identities and package design. I believe that their work is beautifully produced and every piece has a different feel and look. Here are some of my favourite pieces from their vast collection.

Skyscraping Bookmarks

These bookmarks are created from the 3 tallest building in Sweden to a scale of 1:1000. They also have produced a bookmark for the world’s tallest building The Burj Dubai.

Magazine holders

These holders have been illustrated in different styles and periods. Together they create an entire city on a book shelf.

Eguale

Every package tells a little story of its own about the product, the bird, and their origins.

Goteborg & Co

This design is based on a combination offering the diversity of a big city and the friendliness of a small town.

Systembolget

When this academic year finished you would be correct in thinking that I’d be glad of the break but instead of this I applied to take part in the PANI project and was selected to take a position within one of the 6 teams. This project gave 2nd year students the opportunity to work along with a local agency, who would act as your mentor, and participate in a live brief. This year we were asked to create a campaign for Action Cancer which was to go live in August/September 2010. The aim was to encourage more women in their 40’s and the over 70’s to take up the offer of a free mammogram at the Action Cancer house or at their big bus.

In April the brief was handed out and the teams were chosen. I believe that I was extremely fortunate to be mentored by the local advertising agency Genesis. I was in a team with 3 of my class mates – Heather, Kenny and Penny and we were joined by 2 CAM students – Sarah and Chris. We had our first meeting at the beginning of May and we meet 2 or 3 times a week from then on to the completion of the project and we were constantly in contact by email.

With a lot of idea and brain storming we decided that we wanted to create an upbeat campaign and sell the idea of ‘peace of mind’ to all women. We adapted this angle that if you go to Action Cancer you will get the gift of ‘peace of mind’ so hence our theme was born. ‘Giving you peace of mind’ was the nucleus of the campaign and it was a very simple idea. Everything we produced was wrapped up like a present and had a main headline along with additional information about who could avail of this service.

We were all extremely happy with what we managed to produce but we lost out to the Navigator Blue team. You will be able to view the winning campaign in August/September across Northern Ireland. I have posted visuals of what my team produced.

I’ve posted on this artist before but came across these other images created by him and thought it was worth posting. This guy creates pavement art that he paints and the detail is amazing and so surreal.

Happy redesigned the entire content to the general public and not just the connoisseur aware of the huge product range systembolget carries.

The Drawing Unlimited Project (School of Art and Design) took place in November 2009 and March 2010. Students used drawing to motivate, challenge, inspire and make links.

The workshops were designed to explore traditional drawing methods alongside digital methods e.g. drawing over still and moving imagery projected onto large rolls of paper, using paint, ink, crayons, pencils, drawing directly onto video footage via a drawing tablet and collaborating with others to devise drawing methods, improvise tools and solve problems.

I am aware that this interview has been online for some time now, but if like me you sometimes lose sight of why you are doing what you are doing this is the perfect remedy. Milton Glaser’s words of wisdom inspire and reaffirm.

Hillman Curtis offers an inspirational insight into the wonderful workings of the mind of Glaser. This is graphic design comfort food and whether you see yourself as businessman/artist, social commentator or like Glaser all of the above, there is inspiration here for everyone.
