It’s Show Time!

It’s ‘Show time’ folks! Yes, it’s that time of year again and with the final year degree shows fast approaching the Faculty is a blur of activity. An atmosphere of excitement, hysteria and exhilaration prevails and once again this year promises a show par excellence so come along to York Street Belfast between the 7th–19th June for this inspirational event.

A special thank you to Amy and Rachel our placement students at ‘Seed’ for being invaluable members of the team. Amy has worked tirelessly throughout the year to ensure the exacting standards of Design for Visual Communication are met and her professionalism is evidenced by the design work she produced for the Ulster Festival of Art & Design. Although Rachel has only been with us for a short time this dynamic duo have worked over and above the call of duty and we wish them every success for their final year!

This is my contribution to the Viscom Chalkboard. The quote comes from marketing guru Seth Godin, but I thought it was just so applicable given how hard we’re all working currently. And with 18 hours of work overnight, from printing and cutting out all the letter stencils with a hobby knife, measuring my leading, blutacking the letters on the wall in exactly the right position and drawing around with chalk, I think I think the meaning became all the more real for me with sore fingers, hands, wrists, and chapped lips (from all the chalk dust)…

Cafe-a go go (Hillsborough)

This project was really a collaboration between my cousin Michael Magowan (the owner of the spot), my uncle Neil Magowan and myself. Basically my cousin wanted to open up a Cafe style place which had a music side to it. His intention was for a relaxing venue which could hold small style gigs and acoustic performances as well as serve food and drink.

As far as the sign goes my cousin wanted the design to suggest a music aspect to the place, after some attempts of coming up with ideas my cousin decided upon the text being placed on top of a sheet of music. The next point was the design of the text, my cousin wanted it to have a kind of handwriting look to it so this brought in my uncle so is very good at Art full stop but who is very good at Calligraphy. After some time drawing together ideas we settled on one. All I had to do was to create an illustrator file of the design in order to get printed.

Overall I feel the design is quite eye-catching and along with the bright pink paint stands out well, particularly in the street in which it is situated in.

Experiments with light

Hi Folks

These are some experimental photographs I took as part of the modular shapes project. I felt that my typeface wasn’t as strong as it could have been so I wanted to apply it in a way that gave it some impact. So I made some stencils and folded them to make tubes and cones to distort the light. I like how such a simple technique gave some effective and powerful results. Let me know what you think!

Some of my First year work!

These are some screen shots from my 5 second animation that i created using Flash. I created all the elements of the animation in Adobe Illustrator and then edited them in Flash. The idea behind the animation is that the character is standing with his baloon when a gush of wind comes and sweeps him up into the sky. His balloon gets buurst by a bird and he starts to fall but luckily his friend comes and saves him in her plane. The theme was ‘Dayream’ as i am sure you can tell from the storyline!

This is the front and back page of the newspaper spread in the style of the Guardian that i created.

This is the font that i designed for the Modular book project. I used only the pill shape in three different sizes to create the font.

This is an example poster that i created in order to illustrate how the font would be used and what it would look like when the letters are used to create a word.

This is my image piece for the book cover project for The Secret History. I drew out the original image with pencil and marker and then on illustrator i drew over the the trees and figures in the image to create a more prominant black colour, leaving a few of the trees behind unchanged in order to give a more layered effect.

This piece was for the 2 page spread Arts festival project. I decided to create the music section of the booklet and use bands that know to include in the piece. I chose the black/blue combination for the pages because i think that it gives a much more impressive outcome for this type of project in order to appeal to the audience it is aimed at.

Welcome Sign for Church

This is a set of welcome signs for my Church. The first one is to be printed 6ft by 15ft and the one below is 7ft by 5ft so their quite large scale. The initial aim was for the signs to stand out to passers-by as well as hopefully reaching out to parts of the community with foreigners to encourage them to come along to the Church.

Holly Anderson (well-renowned local photographer from Uni lol) helped me take a collection of photographs focusing on a hand gesture as the ‘hand’ is synonymous with welcoming people. As the piece was quite a large scale I decided to live trace the photographs in Illustrator and then apply the text. Overall I feel the design is very simple but hopefully effective.
