Sea Pecknold has been taken on by Rokkit and he has directed this film for BBC Knowledge. This is his first venture into directing in a commercial setting.

I discovered this short animation on Creative Review. In my opinion this animation is very successful and contains quite a lot of information. I particularly like the way that it links one scene to the next the way they have achieved this creates added interest. It doesn’t jump and this means the entire animation works as a whole.

Andersen M Studio has used approximately 3,000 still images to create this animation. It is an extract from Maurice Gee’s novel entitled ‘Going West’. They were commissioned to create this animation by Colenso BBDO. Line Andersen designed and created this and her brother Martin took the photographs. “The entire film is handmade, using only 10a scalpel blades and paper,” explains Martin Anderson. Two SLR cameras were used to capture the images.

This is a beautifully created stop motion animation. The transaction from one image to the next is suburb and the time and effort that has been spent is obvious and this has enabled them to create a piece where every detail has been thoughtfully thought out. The quality of the photographs also enhances the final outcome. Given that we are looking at applying sound to our photo essay hearing how it was applied to this animation has helped me to see how it has all been brought together.

The Hyde Tube is an animation, film based website where you are able to upload your own short animation film. There are many different styles of film some hand drawing, some photographs and other computer generated. I am sure that there is something for everyone and you could spend hour’s exploring the different animations that are to hand. In my opinion it is well worth a look. I really like Mrs Mily, particularly the freeness demonstrated in the animation, it has all been hand produced and with the use of black, white and red which keeps it really simple and very effective. Also Mrs Ivy Monsoon wedding, this is a good example of how to transform from one scene smoothly into another, with the employment of lines and dots leading you through the opening titles.

I also then thought of the graphics for ‘Juno’. Whether or not you like/have seen the film the titles are really well done. A mix of video and hand-drawn illustration. They are done by ‘shadowplay‘ who have done some other graphics too. Really like the titles – but maybe because of the music too – if it had been a still from it I might not have given it a second thought, but music seems to add more life to illustration I think…

So I haven’t posted in a few days because I have been super busy. After watching a lot of chalk animations, I decided that I definitely wanted to try out an animation but I wanted to do it different. I didn’t want to go out and buy a cheap mdf chalk board instead I wanted to mix it up and create a chalk animation on a larger scale. After researching online I discovered that any wall in your house can be painted in to a chalk board by simply buying a tin of chalk board paint, another surprise was that I found that long gone are the days when you could only paint chalkboards black, you can now buy a full range of colours to paint; blue, green, purple, pink. I however wanted to stay traditional and bought black chalk paint, its £10 for a 750ml tin, which isn’t the cheapest as you need to do two coats, so I had to unfortunately half the size of wall that I was planning on painting. (this is the paint that I bought)

So for the past 2 days I have been painting half of my bedroom wall black and painting abstract style flowers down the opposite side (they are quite like the style of an artist called Brandon Boyd) to break up the dark black on the wall. I am so excited I have to wait another few hours before I can actually draw on it but I can not wait. It will be great for using to brainstorm on when I start on projects aswell. A huge blank canvas on my wall, that I can draw and redraw on. It’s great.

So I just wanted to let the class know that you can buy the paint and maybe someone one else would like to paint on of their walls or all of them into a chalkboard!
