Happy was established in Gothenburg in 1997. They are a graphic design company that want to help and maintain client’s brand. They produce a range of design medium, ranging from branding, identities and package design. I believe that their work is beautifully produced and every piece has a different feel and look. Here are some of my favourite pieces from their vast collection.

Skyscraping Bookmarks

These bookmarks are created from the 3 tallest building in Sweden to a scale of 1:1000. They also have produced a bookmark for the world’s tallest building The Burj Dubai.

Magazine holders

These holders have been illustrated in different styles and periods. Together they create an entire city on a book shelf.

Eguale

Every package tells a little story of its own about the product, the bird, and their origins.

Goteborg & Co

This design is based on a combination offering the diversity of a big city and the friendliness of a small town.

Systembolget

When this academic year finished you would be correct in thinking that I’d be glad of the break but instead of this I applied to take part in the PANI project and was selected to take a position within one of the 6 teams. This project gave 2nd year students the opportunity to work along with a local agency, who would act as your mentor, and participate in a live brief. This year we were asked to create a campaign for Action Cancer which was to go live in August/September 2010. The aim was to encourage more women in their 40’s and the over 70’s to take up the offer of a free mammogram at the Action Cancer house or at their big bus.

In April the brief was handed out and the teams were chosen. I believe that I was extremely fortunate to be mentored by the local advertising agency Genesis. I was in a team with 3 of my class mates – Heather, Kenny and Penny and we were joined by 2 CAM students – Sarah and Chris. We had our first meeting at the beginning of May and we meet 2 or 3 times a week from then on to the completion of the project and we were constantly in contact by email.

With a lot of idea and brain storming we decided that we wanted to create an upbeat campaign and sell the idea of ‘peace of mind’ to all women. We adapted this angle that if you go to Action Cancer you will get the gift of ‘peace of mind’ so hence our theme was born. ‘Giving you peace of mind’ was the nucleus of the campaign and it was a very simple idea. Everything we produced was wrapped up like a present and had a main headline along with additional information about who could avail of this service.

We were all extremely happy with what we managed to produce but we lost out to the Navigator Blue team. You will be able to view the winning campaign in August/September across Northern Ireland. I have posted visuals of what my team produced.

While browsing on the CR website I came among some really interesting links and images that are particularly appropriate for this Christmas season and for that reason I decided to post the images that caught my eye.

Bjorn Runne Lie, a Bristol illustrator, was commissioned by No Brow to create four Christmas card designs. They had these screen printed by hand which would result in each card being different colours.

This was designed for visitmanchester.com by Peter Saville in association with Howard Wakefield. If you are interested click here to see what it looks like open.

Raw Design, as part of the Christmas By Colour project asked an array of designers and image makers to produce a selection of colours that they believed totally summed up the Christmas season. The paper was provided by GF Smith and this permitted CBC to print posters that brought into view the submissions that they had received. This year the CBC asked for the selection of 40 to be reduced to the top 12 favourites. These are now available to buy in packs of six from christmasbycolour.co.uk.

Studio 8, was asked by the Paper Company Fedrigoni to design their 2010 calendar. This takes on the form of a pile of coloured paper, there is a sheet to represent each day of the year. A number to represent each date is perforated into a sheet and this means it can be pushed out and moved to the top of the pile each morning.

I came across these pictograms while I was having a look at the Creative Review blog and thought that they fitted in really well with our signage project and they demonstrate that you can successfully create signage that contains images only and that words are not always necessary to achieve the desired effect. It also shows that you don’t always need words to portray the message clearly. I’d like you to identify the variety of sports shown – please let me know how you got on.

These pictograms are believed to have been created by SomeOne. They really wanted to push the concept for the pictograms and one of the outcomes from this was to create two style versions – a silhouette version which used high visibly and an information based application

and then a dynamic version using both as decoration and where a more exciting version is called for, such as on posters or banners

This is how the Track Cycling ‘dynamic’ pictogram, with the silhouette version inset will work

Like my last post this one contains examples of work produced by Airside. It shows their collaboration with pop star Mika, in particular the design of his debut album ‘Life in Cartoon Motion’. The use of colour resembles the work for Lemon Jelly which was also done by the design company. After reading up about the project it seems it was a joint effort between Mika, his sister Yasmine and Airside. Starting with Mika’s music Yasmine would then produce paintings which the design firm then took and worked with to create a finished piece as it were.

“Mika’s vibrant identity extends beyond his songs and their boldly illustrated record sleeves into a distinctive, fully-formed visual brand.” – extract from the book ‘Airside’ by Airside

Overall I think the designs are brilliant regardless of what you think of the music you must agree that the artwork is rather good, it shows large amounts of creativity and visual awareness I believe.

Hope you enjoy!
