These bottle cover designs for Jones Soda Co are fantastic, really innovative in packaging design. I really like the simple application and the individually illustrated bottles. They are really fun and eye catching. They remind me of the Coca-Cola advertisements by eBoy, it almost has that lego-esk feel and look to it but with a slightly more modular feel. After further research I discovered that Jones Soda Co. have been customising their bottles since 2003. Go the the Jones Soda Co. website you can even customise your own bottle by uploading photos! There are also many more designs to see too:

I really like the lego-esk, modular design. It makes me think of gaming or augmented technology because Belfast is the city I live in. It’s just really experimental, fun and it is probably one of the more innovative advertisement designs Coca-Cola have used. It also made me think of the Jones Soda Co. bottle designs.

Hi everyone! I was looking around on a few different websites and came across this unique advertising campaign for McDonalds. It was done as part of a national campaign promoting McDonald’s restaurants. A Vancouver lamp post became part of an out-of-home optical illusion, appearing to pour coffee into a giant cup on the footpath.
At the time, McDonald’s was giving away free small cups of its tea and coffee for a two-week period, in an effort to attract new breakfast customers. Advertising firm Cossette’s Vancouver developed the concept for a lamp post near 6th Avenue and Cambie Street to be turned into a kettle and cup. The post was wrapped in brown vinyl to resemble poured coffee, while an oversized kettle was attached to the end.
Elsewhere in the city, a bus stop shelter was turned into an ‘hourglass,’ with an ever-diminishing number of coffee beans reminding customers of the promotion’s short-term nature. I think this was an excellent way of advertising McDonald’s breakfast as both the lamp post and bus stop looked so different and unique and therefore was a brilliant way of catching people’s attention.

This firm has produced such an array of commercials and films and each one is unique and offers something new and innovative. I have made a list of some that particularly caught my eye and inspired me: Dundrum Centre, Compaq, Orange, BBC Drama – The Sins, UKTV, LoveSport, Park Foot Ball and the Welcome to Glaringly. Let me know what you think and tell me which are your favourites.

Just a little fun? Or advertising that plumbs new depths of cynicism?

Reminded me of the great debate last semester from Jonathan & Dale/Stephen, Allister & Vasare about the ethics of advertising. It raises really uncomfortable questions about the current political climate, and how far advertisers (in essence, designers, us) go to sell some tat.

Also, a good time to mention Milton Glaser’s ‘Road To Hell‘:

“I once created a test called The Road to Hell. I had just finished illustrating a section of Dante’s Divine Comedy for an Italian publisher. When I first got the assignment I was unhappy that I had been given Purgatory as a subject as opposed to Inferno. As an illustrator, Hell had always seemed more interesting to me. Frankly, I never quite understood the difference between Hell and Purgatory. As you may know, the difference is simply that those in Hell are not aware of what put them in Hell and are doomed to be there forever. Those in Purgatory are aware of their sins and consequently have the possibility of getting out by moving to a higher plane. This fact immediately made Purgatory more relevant to me, in part, because Purgatory is where most of us are right now. In any event, awareness of what we actually do in life seems worth thinking about.

1. Design a package to look larger on the shelf?

2. Do an ad for a slow-moving, boring film to make it seem like a lighthearted comedy?

3. Design a crest for a new vineyard to suggest that it’s been in business for a long time?

4. Design a jacket for a book whose sexual content you find personally repellent?

5. Design an advertising campaign for a company with a history of known discrimination in minority hiring?

6. Design a package for a cereal aimed at children, which has low nutritional value and high sugar content?

7. Design a line of T-shirts for a manufacturer who employs child labor?

8. Design a promotion for a diet product that you know doesn’t work?

9. Design an ad for a political candidate whose policies you believe would be harmful to the general public?

10. Design a brochure piece for an SUV that turned over more frequently than average in emergency conditions and caused the death of 150 people?

11. Design an ad for a product whose continued use might cause the user’s death?”
