If you were putting together a wish list of design books, what would be top of the list? With so many gorgeous books available it can be hard to decide, but what do you think is essential for any self-respecting bookshelf.
Thinking and dreaming caps on please, whatever you choose, please upload a pic of the cover and brief synopsis and even a link to amazon/magma.
There is a good reason for this request that will become clear.
One of my favourite books at present is “Sketchbooks: The Hidden Art of Designers, Illustrators & Creatives” by Richard Brereton. Amazon: http://bit.ly/ctgSgJ
This book offers an inspirational insight into the disparate inner workings of a selection of some of the most prestigious designers, illustrators etc. The glimpses into the sketchbooks of each artist is accompanied by an interview/biography which gives a further understanding of how they use their sketchbooks, how they think and how they arrive at finished work. This book emphasises the importance of keeping sketchbooks, what may be a random sketch one day could be the gem of an idea the next.
A book that is very high on my wish list is “Area_2″ by Ellen Lupton. Amazon: http://bit.ly/di9k9E
In this, the second of Phaidon’s ‘Area’ series, 100 internationally renowned graphic designers have been selected for review by 10 experts in the field. The book has been divided into 100 four-page sections; each section showcasing the work of a designer alongside a critical appraisal by one of the 10 curators. As the work covers a vast array of design disciplines including posters, typography, illustration etc., I feel it would be an invaluable resource for any practising designer.
Great Book I read recently:
How to be a Graphic Designer, Without Losing Your Soul by Adrian Shaughnessy
Check it out, he has some really interesting views and an insight to how he started out in the industry. Some nice layout tips too the writer loves his grid systems. The funny thing is what attracted me to the book is it’s cover was nicely designed, the irony.
You can pick it up on amazon for 12 pounds, it can be found in the library also.
