Going West on YouTube

Andersen M Studio has used approximately 3,000 still images to create this animation. It is an extract from Maurice Gee’s novel entitled ‘Going West’. They were commissioned to create this animation by Colenso BBDO. Line Andersen designed and created this and her brother Martin took the photographs. “The entire film is handmade, using only 10a scalpel blades and paper,” explains Martin Anderson. Two SLR cameras were used to capture the images.

This is a beautifully created stop motion animation. The transaction from one image to the next is suburb and the time and effort that has been spent is obvious and this has enabled them to create a piece where every detail has been thoughtfully thought out. The quality of the photographs also enhances the final outcome. Given that we are looking at applying sound to our photo essay hearing how it was applied to this animation has helped me to see how it has all been brought together.
