Helen Musselwhite

July 22nd, 2009

One of the first things that i came across when browsing the creative review blog today. It was also published in the magazine (Creative Review) this month (July 09) as one of the featured artist. All of her work is handcrafted and one of pieces unless you specifically request for particular work even then there will be slight differences. Her work is based “on all forms of mid century design, folk and ethnic art, as well as current and future trends.”

“Each piece combines the hand cutting, folding and scoring of a wide range of papers and card that are further worked on to create patterned and textured surfaces. They are then used to build scenes in box frames which are often complex and consist of many layers. This process means that each item of work is truly individual with no two pieces the same.Influenced by the natural world each piece is manipulated to become an intriguing place, a glimpse into another world of fiction and fairytale.”

I really like this artist’s style, very feminine, has a traditional yet modern effect. The fact that the paper’s are layered gives the piece more 3-D depth, and the colours used are all themed and match very well. The style she works in is very reflective of the natures theme and goes very well with it. Below are two links, one for the blog where i found this artist, and the other a link to her website which contains many of her other beautiful intricate creations:

Her work reminds me of the start of Watership Down, all beautiful circles and triangles inside them.

I remember seeing a lifesize forest madeout of white paper, all silhouettes and lit beautifully. The work and patience involved and the utter elegance of the white made for a really special piece.
