W. J. T. Mitchell is Professor of English and Art History at the University of Chicago. He is editor of the
interdisciplinary journal, Critical Inquiry, which is devoted to critical theory in the arts and human sciences. He is a specialist in the field of media, visual art and literatureband, in particular, the emergent fields of visual culture and iconology (the study of images across the media).

He is acknowledged for his work on the relationship between visual and verbal representations in social and political issues.

At this point each year the nine acres of York Street campus are transformed into the country’s biggest, most colourful and highly charged exhibition space. Over 300 final-year students exhibit their work which spans disciplines such as painting, textiles, architecture, interactive multi-media design, ceramics, jewellery, photography...

This is a rare opportunity to get a flavour of today’s emerging talent and a preview of tomorrow’s trends. It’s also the moment to buy work from one of the future stars of the art and design world.

Show continues until 19 June.

Greg Maguire 'Avatar: the insight'

Greg Maguire

Greg Maguire was the Creature Technical Director on the recordbreaking film, Avatar. He was responsible for the Banshees, their Na’vi riders and the Great Leonopteryx, as well as the spectacular explosion scenes.

His company Zoogloo, has worked on box office hits including Harry Potter 3: The Prisoner Of Azkaban, Happy Feet and Terminator Salvation. Greg looks after all aspects of the character creation process: from design, modelling and rigging, to animation, cloth simulation and rigid body dynamics.

A panel discussion introduced by Hugh Mulholland

Michele Robecchi is the former editor of Flash Art and Contemporary and currently editor of contemporary art at Phaidon Press. He has written catalogue essays for many artists, including Vanessa Beecroft, John Bock and Maurizio Cattelan.

Karen Downey is curator at Belfast Exposed, developing the archive, exhibition and publishing programmes. In 2009 she curated Northern Ireland’s presentation at the Venice Biennale.

In 1989 Donovan Wylie published his first book 32 Counties: Photographs of Ireland. In 1997 at the age of 26 he became a full member of Magnum Photos. He was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2010.

 

Anna Fox

Anna Fox is an important figure in British colour photography. Her highly charged photographs, lit by flash, are a mix of social observation and personally originated and stylised imagery. Her early publication Workstations observed London office culture in the mid-Thatcher years; more recently, The Village, was a multi-media collaboration with the writer Val Williams; Country Girls, saw a collaboration with singer/songwriter Alison Goldfrapp and Friendly Fire, which records the leisure activity of paint-balling in the manner of war reportage.

She was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2010 for her exhibition Cockroach Diary & Other Stories.

 

Paul Young 'Cartoon Saloon'

Paul Young

Paul Young is the co-founder of Cartoon Saloon, a multi-award winning animation and illustration design studio making feature films, television series and commercials, graphic novels and children’s books. The company developed the successful cartoon series Skunk Fu which was nominated for a BAFTA Children’s Award in 2008. In February this year their animated film The Secret of Kells featuring the voice of Brendan Gleeson was nominated for an Oscar at the 82nd Academy Awards.

Paul will talk about Cartoon Saloon’swork – from producing TV commercialsto Oscar-nominated films.

Ian Berry made his reputation in South Africa. He was the only photographer to document the massacre at Sharpeville in 1960, and his photographs were used to prove the victims’ innocence.

He joined Magnum in 1962 and in 1964 became the first contract photographer for the Observer Magazine. Since then, assignments have taken him around the world: he has documented Russia’s invasion of Czechoslovakia; conflicts in Israel, Ireland, Vietnam and Congo; famine in Ethiopia; apartheid in South Africa; and child slavery in Africa. Most recently he has worked in Greenland for a book on climate control.

Last year's PANI winners!

Now in its second year, the Publicity Association of Northern Ireland and the University of Ulster have come together for this creative showcase. Throughout May, six student groups worked with six top advertising agencies on a competitive advertising campaign and pitched to a jury panel in June.

This exciting initiative has given students the opportunity to put their creative and marketing skills to use in the design of a real advertising campaign under the guidance of professional mentors from Ardmore, ASG, AVBrowne, FireIMC, Genesis and Navigator Blue.

The jury has decided and the winning team will be announced at this presentation event, amidst the cream of local talent.

Jon Tan & Elliot Jay Stocks
Talking Typography

Talking Typography

Reprising some of the themes from their celebrated SXSWi web typography discussion Quit Bitchin and Get Your Glyph On, internationally renowned designers Jon Tan and Elliot Jay Stocks will be ‘Talking Typography’. Tan and Stocks will discuss the overcoming of constraints on the web to create elegant, legible, and expressive typography in a medium that is changing almost daily.

Jon Tan is a founding member of Analog, and co-founder of Fontdeck. He serves on Smashing Magazine’s Experts Panel and is a member of the International Society of Typographic Designers.

Elliot Jay Stocks is a designer, illustrator, speaker, and author whose portfolio includes work for an international roster of clients. He is the creative force behind 8 Faces, a new printed magazine dedicated to typography.

 

Matthew Pritchett 'MATT'

Matthew Pritchett has been the pocket cartoonist on the Daily Telegraph newspaper since 1988. He studied graphics at St. Martins School of Art and had his first drawings published in the New Statesman and subsequently in Punch and The Spectator.

His witty political cartoons and satirical sketches are acutely observed and he is four-times winner of the Cartoon Art Trust annual prize. In 2003 The Observer listed him as one of the 50 funniest people in the UK.

Matt will talk about his life as a cartoonist, how he creates his material and how he has developed his distinctive style that is adored by thousands of readers every day.

The Carson McDowell Collection

Over the last seven years Carson McDowell has demonstrated its commitment to emerging artistic talent through the purchasing of works of art from the final year degree shows.

This exhibition is a selection of work from their collection, shown in conjunction with a series of commissioned photographs by Stephen Moffitt, a second-year Visual Communications student who has recorded a working day at their offices. His photographs illustrate how the collecting and display of artworks has contributed to a conducive and pleasant working environment that is enjoyed by staff and clients.

Carson McDowell’s collection includes works by Diana Hadden, Emma Connolly, Colin Williams, Christina Ewart, David Turner, Derek Ogilby, Tommy Long and David Withers.

 

The Secret Laboratory:
Notebooks and Narratives
8–19th June. Foyer, York St

Secret Laboratory

This exhibition shows the way architects’ ideas and studies are gathered in private sketchpads. It uncovers a hidden world of ideas in collage, drawings and notes, which reveal the workings and thinking behind each architect in intriguing and unorthodox ways.

Local and international architects show their work, illustrating beautifully the world of sketchbooks, ideas and doodles, which become buildings and environments that adorn our city landscapes.
